DESIGN PROJECT:: COZY TRANSITIONAL LIVING

A HIDDEN GEM

Picture this!  A narrow dirt road  shaded by a canopy of overgrown trees, as you turn every corner another home appears more beautiful than the next resting on acres of land. When you think it just can't any better we approach a beautiful white carriage style home with a winding driveway which  charmingly states "Welcome Home."

With a growing family and renovation underway, our clients were eager to see the transformation come to life. For the family room, we paired a rich mocha leather sofa with hints of rust, and a  classic herringbone pattern for pillows. With so many windows surrounding the room we wanted to  allow for all the natural light to flow thru, but to soften the room we incorporated a cotton/linen drapery fabric. The drapery was one of our client's favorite with small scale sketches of birds in flight! If you ask me the pair of chairs upholstered in a grayscale peacock fabric stole the show. These two beauties sit perfectly together showing off their sleek and curvy profile!

Designing for the master bedroom came with one request from our client- "must have the softest carpet!"  With this simple request we were given free reign to create this moody yet refreshing space! Using this amazing  wallpaper mural which resembled a storm rolling in on the ocean, we were able to incorporate other elements with drapery and lighting to help lighten the space. We placed abstract art throughout the room as well to help pull the moody hues throughout the space. In the corner of the room was the coziest plaid flannel chair I ever did  have the pleasure to lay in. Literally laid in... this thing was heaven!

For the master bathroom we kept the transitional style of the rest of the home and introduced a industrial with a bit of glam flair . Since there was  great variation from piece to piece  we were able to use  the same porcelain tile throughout the shower, vanity walls and floor, but changed the shape and or direction of the tile. The brass hardware and fixtures looked like beautiful jewelry on the espresso cabinetry, and paired lovely with the large sconces flanking the custom mirrors made at our local frame shop!

DESIGN CHAT:: FLORIDA COASTAL WITHOUT CLICHÉ

HOW TO CREATE A UNIQUE COASTAL DESIGN

As the weather warms up for all, beach vibes consume our every day life.  Who doesn't want to be sipping a fruity drink with our toes in the sand?!  Beach decor is everywhere because it's light, airy, and invokes a sense of nostalgia & relaxation.  Just like you don't want to show up to a pool party in the same bathing suit your friend has on, your coastal decor doesn't have to look like everyone else's.

Bright, Fun Color

Blues, greens, oranges, and pinks make a space instantly feel tropical.  Stick to light walls and make your upholstery smile.  Using different textures of fabrics will make your space less sugary sweet.

Airy, Monochromatic

If color is fear inducing, you can stick to the contrast of white and navy for a rich, coastal feel. The light walls with the white upholstery and the navy accents allow for the natural light outside to be part of the color palette.

Natural Elements

Whether it is an amazing piece of artwork for your walls or a piece of furniture, part of the coastal theme is definitely keeping to nature.

We once had a client say that when he walked into a coastal room he wanted to feel relaxed and like he should be drinking a Corona.  Coastal decor should be just that: fun and relaxing.

DESIGN CHAT:: HOW TO STYLE YOUR BED

THE BEST WAYS TO DRESS YOUR BED

This is a subject that we have conversations with clients about often, dressing your bed. A lot of work goes into your interior and creating the perfect serene space for you to rest your head. Now the big question - what to rest your head on.

There are so many styles, colors, thread counts, duvets, throw blankets, throw pillows, dust ruffles... oy vey! The list goes on and on, it can certainly be daunting.

I remember when I first started my design career in 2006 (yikes, where does time go?!) more trim, more bedding, more details, more, more, more and more pillows was quite the trend. Now, well now, these days I've certainly transformed into a more streamlined bedding type of gal. For many reasons, but the one big reason really is...

WHO HAS TIME FOR ALL THOSE PILLOWS?!

So here are a few of my favorite dressed beds from our projects to get your bedding dreams rolling.

1. TAILORED AND SIMPLE

For this bedroom, we were inspired by the tailored appeal of mens suiting. Monochromatic gray sheets, paired with sexy stripes and muted textures make for a strong but peaceful place for this busy CEO to rest after his long day at the office. We kept it super simple with large king shams and one long bolster to adorn the stripe duvet.

2. COZY TEXTURES AND SIMPLE PATTERNS

This is the perfect little cozy haven. We had fun mixing patterns and textures with this one, but the outcome was not overpowering at all. The modern matelasse pattern works very well with the geometric embroidered drapery and single throw pillow.

3. NAUTICAL INSPIRED GUEST BEDROOM

With this guest bedroom we wanted to create a relaxing space for guests to enjoy while visiting this sunny Old Northeast historic home. So a nod to the nautical life was kind of a no brainer. Keeping this space light and airy but mixing some patterns makes it inviting and not pretentious. Guests can really relax and feel welcomed here, without a lot of stress of messing up too many pillows or having to make an overly thought out bed every morning.

4. BLACK AND WHITE CONTEMPORARY

Simplicity was certainly key with this black and white contemporary master bedroom. Low maintenance and high contrast make this master bedroom striking. Black sheets with two simple king pillows stacked on each other - done and done. Sometimes keeping it really basic are best for the space and lifestyle of the homeowner. Paired with the bold geometric drapery, we think it does just the trick.

4. BEACHY MINIMALIST

With Hotel Cabana Clearwater Beach, easy peasy was the name of our game! We want guests to feel refreshed, bright and airy when they walk into their suites - and the service staff needs it to be functional, simple and able to turn over quickly. So white bedding and two stacked pillows was the perfect combination for this modern minimalist beach hotel.

5. TRADITIONAL AND TEXTURED

For this detached mother in law suite apartment guest room, rich and cozy was our goal. This homeowner loves cozy moody spaces, antique rugs and things with a story. So the bedding was kept rather simple, to compliment the area rug, floral drapery and antiques we styled the space with. Monochromatic pattern mixing, herringbone and a traditional matelasse pattern. Simple pillows and a nice throw to keep guests cozy on those rare chilly Saint Petersburg nights!

All in all, you can see we tend to be a bit more on the simple side with our bedding choices. At the end of the day, its really what matches up with your lifestyle and what creates the most relaxing environment for you! So tell us - what is YOUR bedding style?

With love and design-y dreams,

BOHO CHIC NURSERY

DREAMY LITTLE SPACES

Excited would be an understatement when we were approached by a long time client and friend to design their second daughters nursery!

When we found out our client wanted a bohemian vibe- visions of tassel, textures, muted tones, and layers emerged. Just enough detail to create a cozy yet playful space!

As a mom of two little girls, tiny human spaces have always been my favorite. However, creating a space where mother and daughter will bond and memories will be made is fulfilling in so many wonderful ways. A beautiful space is great but all the laughs and smiles which will be shared within it... well thats what makes it perfect :)

Till next time!
